From start to finish, Follansbee Steel strives to be environmentally responsible by following strict manufacturing guidelines to produce high-quality finished products.

In response to growing concerns about the usage of lead, in the early 1990s, Follansbee Steel developed a replacement for the historic tin/lead alloy coating and introduced a ZTĀ® (zinc/tin) alloy. Made from a proprietary formula of zinc, tin and other trace metals, the lead-free ZT alloy provides better corrosion resistance than its predecessor and creates a safer manufacturing environment for Follansbee Steel employees.

Follansbee Steel Terne II and TCS II products feature 75 percent or more recycled content. In turn, scraps and excess material are recycled to reduce our impact on landfills.

The only material used in the manufacturing process that is considered to be hazardous is hydrochloric acid, which is diluted to 8% and is used to clean the steel sheet. Zinc chloride is also used on the metal before the ZT alloy coating is applied. Because of these materials, the West Virginia Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classifies Follansbee Steel as a small quantity generator of hazardous materials and we comply with state regulations for proper use and disposal. Follansbee Steel works with licensed contractors to dispose of the material properly and follow EPA standards for recycling.

Follansbee Steel operates air purification systems in the mill to ensure pollutants generated by the manufacturing process are not released into the atmosphere. The air quality is strictly monitored by the West Virginia EPA to ensure compliance.

A Follansbee Steel roof will last for 75 to 100 years and when the time comes to replace it, it is 100 percent recyclable and is reused to create new products.
