UNC Chapel Hill Facility Gains Durability and Longevity with TCS II Metal Roofing Retrofit

Follansbee® Steel’s TCS II® stainless steel with ZT® (zinc/tin) alloy coating was specifically chosen to help restore the Steele Building at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Approximately 6,000 square feet of TCS II replaced the rectangular four-story brick building’s asphalt shingle roof.

 

Installed as a 1” mechanical lock standing seam roof, Follansbee Steel 28-gauge TCS II served as an ideal roofing material choice. Approximately 250-feet of gutters custom fabricated from 26-gauge TCS II were installed with the standing seam roof. The new roof combines visual appeal with durability for a classic, high-performance addition to the building envelope.

 

Originally a residence hall named after University trustee Walter Steele, the building was completed in 1921 and is now used to house the offices of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, General College, and portions of the College of Arts and Sciences.

 

“The durability and longevity of the Follansbee Steel roof outshines the previous asphalt shingle roof. In addition, it is more aesthetically pleasing than asphalt and can provide double if not more years of service,” explains Mark Robinson, Follansbee Vice President and General Manager. “The metal panels also contributed to a hassle-free installation process since the metal did not require any painting and has weathered naturally to an attractive patina.”

 

TCS II, an architectural stainless steel coated with Follansbee's patented ZT alloy, is solderable and virtually maintenance free. Highly corrosion-resistant, TCS II has surpassed 30,250 hours of ASTM International salt spray testing with no signs of failure. Competitive metal roofing products generally fail at around 2,000 hours of testing.

 

The modernization of the 18,500-square-foot structure included updating the building’s mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems, replacing windows and exterior doors, adding a new foundation perimeter drain system and abating the presence of asbestos and lead paint.  The interior of the building includes new office space and a new elevator.

 

Renovation on the Steele Building began in January 2008 and was completed in May 2008. In addition to Follansbee Steel, Follansbee, WV, the project team included New Atlantic Contractors, Winston Salem, NC as the general contractor and Century Slate Company, Durham, NC as the installer.
