KlassicKolors® ZT® Alloy Coated Steel with Factory-Applied Solar-Reflective Color Coating

Historically, a terne roof requires painting immediately following installation, and regular painting maintenance, thereafter, to ensure a maximum lifespan. But now, with the advent of high-performance architectural coating systems, Follansbee's KlassicKolors® provides a superior alternative.

KlassicKolors is the same highly corrosion-resistant base material as Follansbee Steel's Terne II® ZT® alloy coated steel, but with a factory-applied, high-performance and solar-reflective color coating.

KlassicKolors' color coating can be Valspar's 70% Kynar 500® or Hylar 5000® Fluropon® SR. It is formulated to provide a certified solar reflective cool roof to enhance a building's energy efficiency. The combination of KlassicKolor's ZT® alloy substrate and these color coatings makes KlassicKolors far superior to commodity type, galvanized and color coated steel roofing materials. Unpainted KlassicKolors (or Terne II) achieves 19,250 hours of ASTM B117 Salt Spray testing. Properly maintained, a Follansbee KlassicKolors roof should last indefinitely.

Another major difference between KlassicKolors and typical steel roofing is the material's finished aesthetic. Common steel roofing material appears shiny and plastic-like, whereas KlassicKolors is specially formulated to reproduce the earthy matte-finished oxides of original terne roofs. In fact, KlassicKolors' standard color palette (consisting of Red, Charleston Green, Slate Gray, Black, Green and Stone Gray) was designed by architectural historians to provide architects with the most popular terne roofing hues of historic times. Of course, custom colors are also available, but do require a minimum order of 10,000 lbs. and a 6-8 week lead-time for shipment.

Follansbee Steel provides a 30-year warranty on KlassicKolors installations in non corrosive aggressive environments.

Material Composition, Basic Use and Limitations

Follansbee KlassicKolors® is a prime base sheet of drawing-quality carbon steel, coated both sides with ZT® alloy and factory color coated with Valspar's 70% Kynar 500®, or Hylar 5000® Fluropon® SR and is formulated to provide a certified solar reflective cool roof to enhance a building’s energy efficiency. KlassicKolors can be used for roofs (standing seam, batten seam, flat lock and Bermuda seam), flashing (chimney, base, counter, valley, hip ridge, ledge, dormer, sill, thru wall, termite shield), perimeters, drip edges, mansards, fascia, wall covering and drainage (including all styles of gutters and downspouts).

Limitations: All KlassicKolors surfaces must drain. When applied on a wood deck:

• Wood treatments that are hygroscopic or chemically treated must not be used for decking under KlassicKolors.
• Minimum 1/2" plywood to be specified.
• If sheathing boards are specified, maximum 2" spacing between boards.
• Roof deck must be smooth, clean, dry and must remain dry after application.
• Rosin sized paper is the only permissible underlay on a KlassicKolors application.

Note: Do not apply roofing felts under KlassicKolors.

Installation Details

Forming: KlassicKolors, a soft metal, forms with conventional hand and regular sheet metal shop tools and can be cut with standard sheet metal hand snips or power tools. For standing seam roofs, preformed ready to apply pans are available in lengths up to 35 feet maximum.
